Medicine is my lawful wife and literature my mistress; when I get tired of one, I spend the night with the other.

Anton Chekhov once wrote this, in reference to his profession as a physician and his passion for writing. I feel the exact same way.

Here is the entire passage from one of his letters.

“I feel more confident and more satisfied with myself when I reflect that I have two professions and not one. Medicine is my lawful wife and literature is my mistress. When I get tired of one I spend the night with the other. Though it’s disorderly, it’s not so dull, and besides neither of them loses anything from my infidelity. If I did not have my medical work I doubt if I could have given my leisure and my spare thoughts to literature. There is no discipline in me.”

  1. Thank you so much for nominating me for this challenge. Unfortunately I’m not blogging very much at this time, I could do a quote once a month, but not 3 in 3 days. lol 😉
Here’s a quote from my latest post, one of my favs actually: Adam Lindsay Gordon got it right: “Life is mostly froth and bubble, Two things stand like stone. Kindness in another’s trouble, courage in your own.”
Hope this week treats you kindly. 🙂

      1. I am not a doctor. I only mean I can relate to the idea of two professions and having a passion for both. I’m retired United States Air Force, and now I teach at a community college. I’ve only toyed with the idea of pursuing a PhD, and for now have opted to not. I’m sorry for the confusion. What is your specialty?

        1. Oh sorry about the assumption😬 Its pretty cool that you were in the Air force… but, I’m sure you are tired of hearing that😂…phd is a long process…if you have a passion for the subject, it won’t matter I suppose…I just finished med school…no specialty yet.

          1. Congratulations on your big achievement! That’s wonderful!

And I don’t mind people commenting on my service. My time helped shaped me into who I am today. And I’ve thought about a dissertation; Kate Chopin would be my subject, but for now it’s a no. I have other goals at this time.

Good luck selecting a specialty. That’s very exciting! You should be proud of yourself. 😊
